Designing mobile information and content strategies
for grassroots participation
Watkins, J. 2011
Commissioned by and available from Commonwealth of Learning www.col.org
Recommendations:
This report is based on field studies in Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, India and supported by a review of mobile for development projects. The report makes four main recommendations to any small- to medium-sized organisation aiming to design and implement communication strategies using mobile devices and systems:
1. Sustainable technology intervention is about more than providing access.
2. Complex mobile services require complex human support.
3. Effective program design must include community representation.
4. Demand, supply and cultural hurdles should be anticipated.
These recommendations underline that sustainable mobile information and communication systems require well-defined strategies and complex human networks.
